Taiwan Prepares as Typhoon Krathon Looms

Taiwan is in a tense state of readiness. A strong storm, called Typhoon Krathon, is on its way and expected to hit the western coast early Thursday morning. With winds up to 108mph and gusts reaching 130mph, this typhoon packs a serious punch. Officials have asked people living in areas with low-lying land or near mountains to evacuate. They expect heavy rain, strong winds, and rough seas. Sadly, the storm has already caused deaths and injuries. The National Fire Agency reported two fatalities and over 70 injured due to extreme conditions linked to the typhoon. One elderly man died in Hualien while pruning tree branches, and another was killed when his vehicle hit fallen rocks in Taitung County. Two more people are still missing. Even though Taiwan's western coast usually sees fewer typhoons compared to the eastern region, this storm is different. It will bring heavy rain and strong winds across the whole country. Authorities have taken action, moving over 3,000 people from landslide-prone areas in Hualien County alone. In Tainan and Pingtung counties, around 280 people have been relocated to safer spots. Kaohsiung, a city of 2. 7 million, is in the typhoon's direct path. Authorities have evacuated over 2,500 residents from areas at risk of mudslides and landslides. Military helpers are transporting these folks to temporary shelters by truck. Most shops and eateries remain closed for a second day as people stock up on essentials like bread, meat, and instant noodles. Kaohsiung's airport is also closed due to the storm, with all flights canceled. A Malaysian tourist, Chan Ka Who, found himself stranded there when his flight home was axed. As Typhoon Krathon nears, residents are warned to steer clear of flood- and landslide-prone areas like rivers, coastlines, and mountains. Kaohsiung's Mayor Chen Chi-mai has advised everyone to stay alert and keep tabs on weather updates.
