Taiwan has detained a journalist and several military personnel for allegedly sharing sensitive information with individuals from mainland China. The journalist, identified only by the surname Lin, is accused of paying army officers for secrets. The amounts involved were small, ranging from a few thousand to tens of thousands of Taiwan dollars.
The investigation, led by Taiwan’s Qiaotou District Prosecutors Office, resulted in raids on the homes of the journalist and nine military personnel. The charges include national security violations, corruption, and leaking confidential information. Interestingly, the journalist works for CTi TV, which has had its own legal battles with Taiwan’s National Communications Commission.
This case is unusual because journalists are rarely accused of such activities. Typically, Taiwan focuses on espionage within the government and military. The journalist, Lin Chen-you, is known for covering political news in Taiwan’s legislature.
Tensions between Taiwan and China have been rising. China claims Taiwan as its territory and has increased military pressure. Recently, China conducted large-scale drills around Taiwan following a U. S. announcement of arms sales to the island.
Since 1949, China and Taiwan have been governed separately. The Communist Party took control of mainland China after a civil war, while the Nationalist Party fled to Taiwan. Taiwan has since transitioned to a multiparty democracy.
