Talk Politics With Kids Without Knowing All the Answers

University of Illinois Extension, USATue Nov 03 2026

Kids hear a lot about elections even if they can't vote yet. They see campaign ads, yard signs, and hear talks at school or dinner. It can make them curious or worried.

A youth development educator says parents don't need to have every answer ready. Start the chat by asking what the child has heard and how they feel. Listen closely and let them ask questions. Kids often know more than adults think.

These talks teach respectful disagreement and help kids check facts. Adults can show how to listen, verify information, and share opinions while staying open. The goal is to build confidence so children can form their own views, not have adults decide for them. Skills learned go beyond politics and help them think critically.

Extension offers tools and guides for parents and teachers. These resources support healthy conversations and protect children's well‑being.
