This election season, several states are letting voters decide on new tax rules. Some states want to give childcare centers a tax break, while others hope to fight inflation by raising the minimum wage or removing taxes on daily purchases. Missouri, for instance, might exempt childcare facilities from property taxes, aiming to deal with its shortage of providers. In Nevada, voters will decide whether to make adult and children's diapers sales tax-free, which could ease the squeeze of inflation on families.
Property taxes are also on the ballot in various states. Arizona might let property owners get refunds if their cities don't handle public nuisances like illegal camping or alcohol consumption in public places. Colorado is thinking about expanding property tax breaks for disabled veterans and keeping tax money from sports betting for certain programs. Georgia might up the personal property tax exemption, while Illinois could add an extra tax on large incomes to help with property tax relief.
South Dakota might stop taxing most food items. Oregon is considering giving all residents a $1,600 rebate by increasing the corporate tax rate, but experts warn that businesses might pass costs onto consumers. Experts advise voters to think beyond immediate benefits and consider the larger economic impacts.
