Teachers and School Leaders Meet Face-to-Face: A Step Toward Resolving Marblehead Strike

On Monday, the Marblehead Education Association (MEA) shared their hopes that direct discussions with the School Committee could help find a solution to the ongoing strike. This strike has kept classrooms closed for five school days. The MEA has been eager to sit down with the committee since mediation started. They believe that honest and open conversation between both sides can bring them closer to a fair agreement and reopen schools promptly. One key issue causing the delay is disagreement over wages. The MEA wants the School Committee to ask for a big enough tax override to fully fund schools, including new teacher salaries. The School Committee, however, prefers a smaller override, considering what past voter decisions suggest. The MEA proposes an average tax increase of $926, which the town's proposal cuts down to $300. 74.
