Skiing is a popular sport that offers health benefits but also comes with risks, like accidents due to overestimating skills. Self-assessing skiing ability can be tricky. This is where Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) come in handy. These devices can give skiers feedback on their abilities. A recent study aimed to analyze the skiing quality of recreational skiers using IMU data from the Connected Boot sensor system. The study wanted to see if the skiing quality score from the system matched how skiers assessed their own carving skills. The study also looked at how these assessments changed before and after the study.
Researchers analyzed data from 62 participants who used the sensor system while skiing. They also filled out questionnaires at the beginning and end of the study to rate their skiing skills. The results showed a strong connection between what skiers reported and the system's score. However, skiers tended to rate themselves about 1. 71 points higher than the system's score. Interestingly, the correlation was stronger for female participants compared to male participants.
