Democrats are not happy. They think the Trump administration is playing a dangerous game. The administration has decided to put some tech security measures on hold. These measures were supposed to protect the U. S. from Chinese tech threats. The decision comes just before a big meeting between Trump and China's President Xi.
What's the big deal? Well, the measures included stopping China Telecom from operating in the U. S. and restricting Chinese equipment in American data centers. They also wanted to ban sales of routers from TP-Link and block China Unicom and China Mobile from the U. S. internet business. Plus, there was talk of banning Chinese electric trucks and buses in the U. S.
Senator Mark Warner is not pleased. He thinks the administration is putting national security at risk. He says they are bowing to U. S. companies that want to do deals with Chinese firms. He's worried about the export of sensitive tech and Chinese companies accessing U. S. markets.
Other Democrats are speaking up too. House Foreign Affairs Committee Democrats call it appeasement. They say Trump is making Americans less safe. Senator Jeff Merkley thinks it's a lose-lose situation. He believes it undermines the American tech industry and puts American data at risk.
The administration has also given the green light to Nvidia exporting advanced AI chips to China. They've postponed a rule that would have barred thousands of Chinese companies from buying U. S. technology. Democrats are wondering if Trump will continue to prioritize his interests over American security during his trip to China.
Senator Elizabeth Warren has a theory. She thinks the decisions are linked to the ouster of key U. S. officials. She's asking why the Trump administration is so eager to do Beijing's bidding.
