Tech Titans & Crypto: Who's Buying Influence in US Elections?
Sat Dec 07 2024
Silicon Valley has splashed over $394 million into the recent US presidential election, with a significant chunk coming from Tesla and SpaceX owner Elon Musk. Musk donated a massive $243 million to Donald Trump's campaign, highlighting the increasing clout of tech billionaires in politics. Cryptocurrency advocates have also been very active, pouring money into campaigns to prevent regulation. Google, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, and Netflix are among the tech giants whose executives have made substantial donations. Trump received a total of $273. 2 million from tech moguls, while Kamala Harris got $120. 9 million. The donations show how tech and crypto industries are trying to sway government decisions in their favor.
Marc Andreessen, a billionaire venture capitalist, contributed $5. 5 million to Trump's campaign, even though he supported Hillary Clinton in 2016. The complexity of US political giving allows for large, untraceable donations. For example, Super Pacs can receive unlimited funds from corporations and wealthy individuals, who can then spend freely on political ads. This system has made it possible for billionaires like Musk to donate vast sums without direct public scrutiny.
Trump's tax cuts and potential regulatory changes have attracted support from wealthy backers. Musk’s substantial donation likely secured him a direct line to the president, as Trump appointed him to co-head a new advisory commission. This is a stark contrast to Musk's previous stance, where he urged Trump to retire after the 2016 election.
Crypto donors have also seen benefits from their political spending. Trump nominated a crypto-friendly candidate to head the Securities and Exchange Commission, replacing a more critical figure. Crypto has become one of the top corporate spenders in elections, with the industry targeting both presidential and congressional races. Even critics of Trump, like venture capitalist Doug Leone, have made substantial donations to his campaign.
The shift in Silicon Valley's approach to politics reflects an ideological realignment. Tech giants and crypto advocates are increasingly involved in politics to shape regulations around new technologies like AI and cryptocurrency. Their influence is evident in Trump's nominations and the significant spending on political campaigns.
