In our tech-driven world, smartphones play a big role in shaping how we see each other. But do they truly capture the full range of human skin tones, especially in places like Africa and Asia? TECNO, a brand known for its multi-skin tone imaging, has launched the #ToneProud campaign to tackle this issue.
A study from MIT and Stanford back in 2018 found that some AI systems had a bias against certain skin tones. This is a problem, especially now that AI is used a lot in imaging technology. TECNO believes that technology should represent all skin tones equally. So, they've created a campaign to raise awareness about skin tone diversity and show off their 268 skin tone database.
TECNO uses color codes to classify different skin tones scientifically. This helps them fix biases in color restoration and make their imaging tech more accurate. They want people to understand and be proud of the variety of skin tones worldwide.
The campaign features celebrities like Anggun from Indonesia and Fatima Al-Banawi from Saudi Arabia. They share their experiences with being misrepresented and why they think technology should support all skin tones. Anggun says, "We're all beautiful in our own way, and technology can help change people's minds about that. "
TECNO wants people to celebrate their own skin tones. They've made a website where you can find your skin tone code. You can then share a picture of yourself with the code on Instagram using #ToneProud, #UniversalTone, and #TECNO. This sends a message that everyone should be proud of their skin tone.
TECNO's 268 skin tone patches are a big step towards fair representation. They've worked with color science experts to create the largest and most accurate skin tone database in the industry. This helps their Universal Tone feature capture everyone's true colors.
"TECNO is setting the stage for an inclusive society, " says Fatima Al-Banawi. The campaign shows that every skin tone is special and part of our shared human story.
