Ted Cruz Faces Heat for Election Controversies
Texas, USATue Oct 22 2024
Once upon a time, Texas was a red fortress where Republicans won big. But times have changed. Back in 2018, Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) barely held on to his seat, beating his Democratic rival Beto O'Rourke by just a tiny 2%. Now, as the 2024 election looms, Cruz is worried about another close call, this time against Representative Colin Allred (D-TX).
On Sunday, the Dallas Morning News, Texas's largest newspaper, dropped a bombshell. They endorsed Colin Allred in a front-page editorial. Why the switch? They accused Cruz of playing the "division game, " saying he could have supported a peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 election but didn't.
Cruz was one of the first senators to object to certifying the electoral votes, a move that many blame for the chaos at the U. S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. The editorial called this a dark day in American history.
Allred, on the other hand, gets praise for his willingness to work with both sides. The editorial argues he walks the talk on bipartisanship.
Political scientist Costas Panagopoulos from Northeastern University in Boston thinks Cruz might be in real trouble. He says recent polls show the race is tight, maybe even leaning towards Allred. Texans have been wary of Cruz for a while, and his narrow 2018 win is a reminder of that.
