You might assume that cosmetic procedures are just for grown-ups, but more teens are exploring these options. Previous studies often used surveys to gather thoughts from adults, especially women. But to understand what's next, we need to hear from young people, who are growing up in a world where cosmetic procedures are increasingly common. This study dug into the minds of 42 teens aged 15-19, spread across different backgrounds and regions. They shared their views during 13 group chats, which were then carefully analyzed. These chats revealed five key themes. First, teens know a lot about cosmetic procedures, gleaning info from various sources. This shapes their views and attitudes. Second, they see these procedures as a normal part of life, both at home and abroad. Third, their feelings about cosmetic procedures can change based on the situation. Some teens are open to it, while others aren't. Fourth, when it comes to their own plans, some teens are interested, while others aren't keen. Lastly, teens often distance themselves from the idea of a 'cosmetic consumer', sometimes using stereotypes to describe those who get these procedures. Interestingly, the study found that teens' attitudes are complex and sometimes confusing. To make sense of this, researchers looked at different theories. One is the Cultivation Theory, which suggests that frequent exposure to certain messages can change our perceptions. Another is the cosmetic surgery paradox, which highlights that while some people may approve of cosmetic procedures in general, they might disapprove when it comes to themselves or others they know. The chats also brought up issues of diversity. Diving into these themes gives us a better picture of how teens today think about cosmetic procedures. It's clear that their views are influenced by many factors.
