Tencent Music's Big Earnings Boost
ChinaTue May 13 2025
Tencent Music Entertainment Group, a top digital music service in China, had a great start to 2025. They made $1. 01 billion in the first three months, which is 8. 7% more than the same time last year. This boost came from more people paying for music subscriptions and from ads. But the real game-changer was a big payday from their investment in Universal Music Group.
The company's profit shot up by 201. 8%, reaching $591 million. This is a huge jump and shows how well they are doing. Even when you look at it without that one-time windfall, their profit was still up by 24. 6%. This shows that their core business is strong.
Music subscriptions were a big part of this success. They made $581 million from subscriptions, which is 16. 6% more than last year. They now have 122. 9 million paying users, and each one spends about $1. 57 per month. Overall, their online music services brought in $800 million, a 15. 9% increase. This growth came from subscriptions, ads, merchandise, and concerts.
However, not all areas did well. Their social entertainment services and other segments saw a drop of 11. 9% to $214 million. This was due to changes in regulations and adjustments in live-streaming. But the company is adapting. They renewed their deal with Sony Music and added new features like Dolby Atmos for their top subscribers. They also partnered with more entertainment groups to bring in more international music.
Original content is another big win for Tencent Music. Songs like "To Time" and "One Thought to Eternity" topped local charts. They also sold a lot of artist merchandise, like Teens in Times' album. Offline events were also a hit. Their "Music For Passion" festival in Chengdu drew big crowds and featured popular artists.
Premium audio is a major draw. About half of their top subscribers use enhanced audio formats. Kugou Music even launched a new sound effect for external speakers. These perks, like early concert access and exclusive merchandise, help keep users coming back. Long-form audio, like "The Grave Robbers' Chronicles, " also did very well, surpassing 10 million streams quickly.
A big part of their profit came from a one-time gain of $327 million. This was from getting a 2% stake in Universal Music Group. This investment was reclassified, triggering a gain on the original investment. Their operating profit jumped by 146. 9% to $666 million. Their gross margin also went up to 44. 1%, thanks to more subscriptions and ads, and lower costs from social entertainment.
The company ended the quarter with $5. 19 billion in cash and investments. They also repurchased 5. 9 million shares and paid out a dividend of $0. 18 per share in April. This shows they are confident in their future and want to reward their shareholders.
