The prison is located in Machala, a coastal city in southwest Ecuador. Authorities regained control after the riot, but one police officer was also injured. Ecuador's prisons are among the most dangerous in Latin America. Overcrowding and the influence of gangs linked to Colombian and Mexican drug traffickers have turned them into hotbeds of violence. These gangs operate with smuggled weapons and continue their criminal activities even from behind bars.

Last month, another clash between drug gangs in a different prison resulted in at least 17 deaths. This prison is situated in Esmeraldas, near the Colombian border. Since 2021, over 500 people have perished in prison riots across Ecuador. Last year alone, riots in multiple prisons led to 150 prison guards being taken hostage.
