Things are heating up between the U. S. and Iran. Recent protests in Iran have sparked a war of words between U. S. President Donald Trump and top Iranian officials. It all started when Trump took to his Truth Social platform to warn Iran about cracking down on peaceful protesters. He said if Iran "violently kills peaceful protesters, " the U. S. "will come to their rescue. " So far, at least seven people have been killed in the protests, which were triggered by the collapse of Iran's currency, the rial. Not long after Trump's post, Ali Larijani, a key figure in Iran's government, fired back on the social media platform X. He accused the U. S. and Israel of stirring up the protests, though he didn't provide any proof. Larijani warned Trump that U. S. involvement in Iran's internal issues could lead to chaos in the region and harm U. S. interests. He also reminded the U. S. about its military presence in the Middle East, hinting at potential consequences.
Another Iranian official, Ali Shamkhani, who advises Iran's Supreme Leader, also weighed in. He cautioned that any outside interference in Iran's security would be met with a firm response. Shamkhani reminded people of past U. S. interventions in countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Gaza, suggesting that Iranians know better than to trust American promises of help. The protests in Iran, now in their sixth day, are the largest since 2022. Back then, nationwide demonstrations erupted after a young woman, Mahsa Amini, died in police custody for not wearing her hijab properly. While these current protests are significant, they haven't spread as widely or been as intense as those following Amini's death. Iran's President, Masoud Pezeshkian, has been trying to reach out to the protesters, signaling a willingness to negotiate. However, he admitted there's not much he can do about the economic crisis. The rial has lost so much value that $1 now equals about 1. 4 million rials. This economic struggle is what initially sparked the protests, but they've since grown to include calls against Iran's theocratic government.
