Tensions Rise: Ukraine and Russia Clash Over Ceasefire Deals

UkraineWed Mar 26 2025
Ukraine faced a night of chaos as Russian drones struck multiple targets. The city of Kriviy Rih experienced its most significant drone attack since the war began. Russia, however, claimed to have shot down several Ukrainian drones over the Black Sea and other regions. The Kremlin stated that it would honor a Black Sea ceasefire only after certain conditions are met. Meanwhile, Ukraine and Russia accused each other of attacking energy facilities, despite a recent agreement to halt such strikes. The mayor of Mykolayiv reported power outages following drone attacks, while President Zelenskyy confirmed damage to infrastructure in the Sumy region. Ukraine's air defense managed to shoot down 56 out of 117 drones launched by Russia. The remaining drones were reportedly redirected using electronic warfare. This incident raised questions about the effectiveness of the ceasefire agreements brokered by the United States. The Black Sea is crucial for both Ukraine and Russia. It serves as a vital route for exporting commodities. In mid-2022, with Turkey and the UN's help, both countries agreed to allow Ukraine to ship grain through the sea. However, Russia withdrew from the agreement the following year, citing Western sanctions on its banks. This move led to a campaign by the Ukrainian military, which destroyed Russian warships and pushed the Russian Navy out of the western Black Sea. As a result, Ukraine established a new shipping zone, restoring seaborne grain exports to near-prewar levels. The agreements reached in Saudi Arabia aimed to develop measures for implementing commitments to halt strikes on energy facilities. However, both sides accused each other of breaching the agreement. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Ukraine attacked civilian energy infrastructure in three locations, including a gas storage facility in Russian-occupied Crimea. Meanwhile, Ukraine accused Russia of attacking at least eight of its energy facilities since March 18. The head of the military administration in Kryviy Rih reported that the overnight drone attack sparked fires and damaged buildings but caused no casualties. The agreements reached in Riyadh appeared to be a significant step toward ending the war. However, the path forward remains unclear. The Kremlin stated that the Black Sea agreement would only be activated after certain conditions are met, including reconnecting Russian banks to the SWIFT network and lifting some trade restrictions. The United States expressed its commitment to facilitating negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. However, the effectiveness of these agreements remains to be seen. The Black Sea ceasefire and the moratorium on attacking energy infrastructure are crucial steps toward ending the conflict. Nevertheless, both sides must demonstrate genuine political will to make these agreements work.
