Tesla's Self-Driving Cars Face Investigation for Weather Issues

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has started an investigation into Tesla's self-driving systems. They want to know if these systems can handle driving in tough weather conditions like fog or bright sunlight. The investigation was triggered by four reports of Tesla cars crashing in such conditions, one of which led to a pedestrian fatality. The investigation covers several models of Tesla cars made between 2016 and 2024. Some of these crashes happened when the car's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system was in use. The NHTSA wants to find out if the FSD system can detect and respond to bad weather conditions properly. They also want to know if there have been similar crashes and if Tesla has made any updates to the FSD system to improve safety. Last March, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety gave Tesla's self-driving systems a "poor" safety rating. This investigation adds to the ongoing debate about the safety of self-driving cars.
