Tesla's Unlikely Protest Spark
Capitol Hill, Seattle, USATue Jun 24 2025
In Seattle, a group of around 40 activists gathered at the Pine Box bar. They were there to listen to Tesla's quarterly earnings call. This was unusual. It was the first time Emily Johnston, one of the leaders, had done this. It was also the first time a local TV station covered such an event.
The group, known as the Troublemakers, had been active for over a decade. They had been protesting Tesla for two months. They camped outside Tesla showrooms, service centers, and charging stations. Their goal was to draw attention to the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. This was a program to cut government spending. It was staffed by young tech enthusiasts and Musk company alumni. The name DOGE was a reference to an early 2010s meme.
During the call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the protests. He claimed they were organized and paid for. He suggested the protesters were angry because they had once received government benefits. This was a theory Musk had been promoting on his social media platform, X.
The Troublemakers were not deterred. They continued their protests. They were determined to make their voices heard. They wanted to expose the impact of DOGE on government services. They believed it was important to hold Tesla and Musk accountable.
The protests had a significant impact. They drew attention to the issue. They also sparked a national conversation about government spending and corporate influence. The Troublemakers showed that even small groups can make a big difference. They proved that activism can be effective, even in the face of powerful corporations.
