Texas Senate Race Heats Up: Can Democrat Colin Allred Defeat Republican Ted Cruz?

Wed Aug 28 2024
In a surprising turn of events, Democrat Colin Allred is gaining ground on Republican Ted Cruz in the Texas Senate race, as per a recent poll by the Clean and Prosperous America PAC. The poll shows Cruz narrowly leading with a 47% to 45% margin, almost identical to a YouGov/University of Houston poll released on August 22. The Clean and Prosperous America poll also indicates that the Florida Senate race between Sen. Rick Scott and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is heating up, with Scott leading by a mere 3 points (48% to 45%). As Democratic figures have suggested, both Texas and Florida - traditionally red states - could be up for grabs in November for the Senate races and the presidential election between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. If Allred were to flip the Texas senate seat from Cruz in November, he would make history as the first Democrat senator in the Lone Star state since 1988. The Clean and Prosperous America poll reveals that Trump is leading Harris in Texas by 5 points (49% to 44%) and by 4 points in Florida (51% to 47%). According to Greg Rock, executive director of the Clean and Prosperous America PAC, both Florida and Texas are competitive states in the general election, with unpopular incumbents Cruz and Scott holding onto narrow leads. A victory for Allred in Texas would significantly boost the Democratic Party's efforts to maintain control of the Senate after November's elections. Currently, the Democrats hold a 51-49 seat advantage, including four independent senators who caucus or align with the party. The GOP is predicted to flip the West Virginia seat held by outgoing Democrat-turned-independent senator Joe Manchin in November. A University of Houston/Texas Southern University (TSU) poll released in July showed Cruz leading Allred by 3 points (47% to 44%). However, Michael Adams, director of the Executive Master of Public Administration graduate program at TSU, believes that Allred's rising popularity is due to increased name recognition. The Clean and Prosperous America poll, conducted just before Allred's speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, shows Allred trailing Cruz by 2 points. Election forecasters Race to the White House give Cruz a 66% chance of winning November's Texas Senate race, with Allred estimated to have a 34% chance. This is a decrease from the 73% chance Race to the White House gave Cruz in July. The Clean and Prosperous America poll surveyed 837 registered voters in Florida and 725 in Texas between August 21-22. The results have a margin of error of plus or minus 3. 4% in Florida and 3. 6% in Texas.
