A tiny molecular boat and paddle system designed to fix itself in just two minutes. This is the story of a unique glue, or binder, created to help silicon batteries last longer. Silicon batteries have a big problem: they can swell up and break during use. Scientists are working on self-healing binders to solve this issue. However, making a binder that's both strong and able to heal quickly is tough. Most binders either get too tangled and weak, or they can't move fast enough to fix themselves.
Enter our hero: PVA-4FBA-PEI. This binder is inspired by the design of a boat and paddles. It has a special intermediate piece, 4FBA, that acts like the boat, preventing the glue chains from getting too tangled. This allows two chains to move freely, like paddles, and quickly fix any breaks. The binder forms strong bonds, known as covalent bonds, through special junctions called C═N and B─O─C. This makes the binder heal super fast, in just 2 minutes!
But that's not all. This binder is also incredibly strong and stretchy. It has a tensile strength of 14. 4 MPa and can stretch up to 1163% before breaking. This means it keeps the battery structure safe and stable during use. The binder's unique design allows it to have both impressive strength and quick healing abilities.
This discovery offers a new way to think about how glues for silicon batteries should work. It shows that by carefully designing the molecular structure, we can make binders that are both tough and able to heal themselves quickly. This could lead to more durable and efficient batteries in the future.
