The Assistant's Alleged Role in a Dark Scheme

A former finance bigwig's assistant is now in hot water. Jennifer Powers, 45, is accused of some serious crimes. She stands charged with sex trafficking and helping to transport women across states for dubious acts. This all ties back to her former boss, Howard Rubin, a once-respected portfolio manager. Rubin allegedly footed the bill for Powers' fancy lifestyle. Think Manhattan apartments, credit card bills, and even her kids' private school tuition. The indictment claims Rubin covered these costs from 2018 to 2023. Powers and her husband, Stephen, are also accused of hiding millions in payments from Rubin on their tax returns. They reported just $40, 000 in income from Stephen's DJ business over two years. Powers allegedly played a key role in recruiting women for Rubin. These women were often vulnerable, with histories of abuse or addiction. The encounters took place in Rubin's Central Park penthouse, in a room ominously called "The Dungeon. " This soundproofed room was the setting for paid sex acts that prosecutors say went beyond consent. The FBI's assistant director for New York, Christopher Raia, condemned the alleged actions. He stated that the defendants exploited Rubin's status to trap victims. These victims endured severe physical trauma, and any complaints were silenced with legal threats. Rubin is also accused of paying Powers' legal fees. These fees stemmed from a 2017 lawsuit by Playboy models who accused him of abuse. A jury found Rubin liable and awarded the women $3. 9 million. Rubin is appealing this decision. Powers was released on an $850, 000 bond but must wear an ankle monitor and stay under house arrest. She used to be a substitute teacher in Texas but has since been let go. Rubin remains in custody without bail, awaiting his next court date.
