The Big Port Strike: What's Really Going On?

Sat Oct 05 2024
A recent port strike in the US has raised lots of questions about a powerful union called the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and its leader, Harold Daggett. One big issue is that they got a huge pay raise – 62% over six years! This has people wondering how the union is managing its money. There’s something strange about this strike. Out of nearly 50,000 dockworkers in the ILA, only half actually work at the ports. The rest stay home but still get paid through a deal called "container royalties. " This started decades ago to protect jobs but now it seems unfair. For a long time, people have said the ILA is corrupt and connected to crime. A report from 2019-2020 talked about how the union hires people in a way that keeps out criminals and makes sure some members get paid too much. This isn’t the only problem. The same report said that many ILA members are linked to organized crime figures. Nearly 600 of them got over $147 million in pay that wasn't needed by their jobs. Daggett's own life is also under scrutiny. People are talking about his rich lifestyle and how the union spends its money.
