The Big Screen Dilemma: TCL's Giant TV Experience
Fri Apr 11 2025
TCL's 98-inch TV is a beast, both in size and in the challenge it presents when trying to fit it into a typical home. It's a massive 85. 7 inches wide and 49. 1 inches tall, with a footprint that spans 68. 5 inches. If you have a wall big enough to mount it, you're golden. But if not, good luck finding an entertainment center that can handle this monster.
The setup process is no walk in the park. The TV comes packed in a box that's nearly as big as the TV itself, and getting it out can be a struggle. Once you do, you'll need to find a spot for it. The TV's size makes it a bit of a space hog, and it can be tricky to find a place where it won't dominate the room.
But once it's set up, the experience is unlike anything else. The screen is so big that it's like having a movie theater in your living room. Everything from movies to TV shows to games feels more immersive and lifelike. It's easy to see why people dream of having a home theater setup like this.
The TV itself is a QLED panel, which means it delivers bright colors and good contrast. It supports 4K resolution and has a 120Hz refresh rate, which is great for gaming. The picture quality is decent overall, but it's not the best out there. You won't get the same level of contrast and brightness as you would with an OLED or Mini LED TV. But for the price, it's a solid performer.
The TV also comes with a bunch of features that are sure to impress. It supports HDR Ultra, which includes Dolby Vision IQ, Open HDR, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG. It also has a Game Accelerator 240 for 240 VRR support, Dolby Atmos, AirPlay, Chromecast, voice assistant integration, and dual-band 802. 11ac Wi-Fi. There are four HDMI ports, along with optical audio and Ethernet ports.
The sound quality is also impressive, with a built-in subwoofer that delivers a surprising amount of bass. But if you want a true movie theater experience, you'll probably want to invest in a dedicated sound system.
At its price point, the TCL 98-inch TV is a steal. It's hard to ignore the value it offers, especially when you consider that anything better will run you $5, 000 to $10, 000 or more. But before you rush out to buy one, make sure you have the space for it. This TV is a big commitment, and it's not something you can just tuck away in a corner.
