The Big Tech Shake-Up: OS Updates, AI Phones, and New Folds
Sat May 31 2025
OnePlus is diving headfirst into AI. Their latest phones will feature a dedicated AI button. This button, called the Plus Key, can be customized to launch specific apps or shortcuts. It's similar to what Nothing introduced earlier with their Nothing Phone (3a) series. By default, the Plus Key will activate AI Plus Mind. This system saves whatever is on the screen. For example, if you see an ad for a concert, pressing the Plus Key will save the details. The companion app will then extract helpful info to create a calendar event. This feature will first appear on the OnePlus 13s, launching in select markets this June. Later this year, these AI features will roll out to the OnePlus 13 series and other devices. OnePlus is also working on more AI features like AI VoiceScribe, AI Translation, and AI Reframe. These features will make phones more helpful and convenient.
Apple is also making big changes. They are planning to overhaul all of their operating systems. This means renaming them to be more consistent. Starting this year, Apple will denote each OS version by year, instead of by version. Confusingly, it will start with the next year, rather than this year. So the versions we'll see at this year’s WWDC will not be iOS 25, but rather iOS 26, watchOS 26, and so on. This move is part of a larger push toward a cohesive user experience across all Apple platforms. The overhaul could include updated icons, apps, buttons, and a fresh design language. It’s expected to be universal across all the operating systems. Apple’s user interface is a core part of the company’s appeal, so it will be interesting to see how customers react to a big redesign. We’ll find out at WWDC, which kicks off on June 9 at 1 pm ET.
Samsung is also making waves. They are rumored to announce their next generation of folding phones sometime this summer. The Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 are expected to be the stars of the show. Samsung officially confirmed this in a blog post announcing the rollout of the One UI 8 beta program. One UI is the name of Samsung's Android layer, and version eight is based on the upcoming version of Android 16. This update is part of Samsung's ongoing effort to improve their Android experience. It will be interesting to see what new features and improvements Samsung has in store for their folding phones. The tech world is abuzz with anticipation.
Apple's OS overhaul is part of a broader trend in the tech industry. Companies are increasingly focusing on creating a seamless user experience across all their devices. This means that the way we interact with our phones, tablets, and computers will become more consistent. It also means that companies are investing heavily in AI and other advanced technologies. This is because these technologies can make our devices more helpful and convenient. It will be interesting to see how these trends play out in the coming years. One thing is for sure: the tech industry is always evolving, and there are always new and exciting developments on the horizon.
