Red Rooms, a true-crime thriller from 2024, isn't about the murderer, Ludovic Chevalier. Instead, it focuses on Kelly-Anne, an internet sleuth who's strangely obsessed with Chevalier's crimes. Despite the horrors he committed, it's Kelly-Anne's behavior that's truly unsettling. She attends his trial every day and spends nights online, digging deeper into his crimes. Her motives remain mysterious, especially as the story takes a paranoid turn.
The movie begins with Chevalier's trial, leading up to the shocking revelation of videos he sold on the dark web. Both sides agree to show these videos in court, subjecting everyone to a real-life horror. The media frenzy turns the trial into a circus, with groupies and TV crews everywhere. Kelly-Anne watches silently, her expressions mirroring the camera's sweeps.
Kelly-Anne's true motives become clearer as she gets closer to Clémentine, another Chevalier fan. Clémentine is outspoken and claims Chevalier's innocence. This angers Francine Beaulieu, the mother of one of Chevalier's victims. The mystery of one victim's fate drives the story forward.
Red Rooms doesn't shy away from showing society's true-crime obsession. It keeps viewers on edge, even without blood or gore. The idea of the crimes and Kelly-Anne's relationship with them are what haunt us.
