A judge in New York recently handed down a 15-year sentence to a notorious figure in the crypto world, Kwon. The judge wasn't kind. He said Kwon was still hooked on the crypto craze and needed to be stopped. Without Kwon's guilty plea, the sentence would have been even harsher.
This all started in 2022 when Kwon's crypto projects, TerraUSD and Luna, crashed hard. Investors lost big money. Kwon was charged with serious crimes like wire fraud and securities fraud. After his company went bust, Kwon tried to run. He fled South Korea and Singapore, but was caught in Montenegro with a fake passport. He was sent back to the U. S. to face justice.
The Securities and Exchange Commission sued Kwon and his company, Terraform, in 2024. They found Kwon guilty of misleading investors. Kwon and his company lied about how their technology worked and how stablecoins were backed. Investors were tricked.
Kwon agreed to pay over $200 million, and Terraform agreed to pay over $3. 5 billion to settle things. In August, Kwon admitted his guilt. He said he knew what he did was wrong and took full responsibility.
Kwon isn't the only crypto bigwig facing time. Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX, got 25 years. Changpeng Zhao, co-founder of Binance, got four months, but was later pardoned by President Trump.
This story shows how greed and deception can lead to a big fall. The crypto world is full of risks, and not everyone plays fair. Investors need to be careful and think critically before putting their money into these schemes.
