The Democratic Party's Struggle for Support
USAMon Mar 17 2025
The Democratic Party is facing a tough time. Recent polls show that only a small number of people have a good opinion of the party. A survey by NBC News found that just 27% of registered voters view the Democratic Party positively. This is the lowest rating since the poll began in 1990. Similarly, a CNN poll revealed that 29% of U. S. adults have a favorable view of the party. This is a significant drop from 2021 and the lowest rating since CNN started polling in 1992. The Republican Party is not faring much better, with favorability ratings of 36% in the CNN poll and 39% in the NBC poll. However, the GOP has stronger support within its own base, with 79% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents viewing the party positively. In contrast, only 63% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents have a positive view of their party, down from 72% earlier this year.
The Democratic Party's internal divisions are also clear. A CNN poll shows that opinions on the party's leadership are split along demographic lines. While 52% of Democratic-aligned adults think the leadership is heading in the wrong direction, 48% believe the party is on the right track. Interestingly, 57% of Democratic-aligned women and people of color support the party's direction, compared to just 38% of men and 32% of white college graduates. This highlights a significant divide within the party's base.
The polls were conducted in early March, before Democrats voted to support a Republican spending bill to avoid a government shutdown. Despite this, 57% of Democrats and Democratic leaners believe the party should focus on stopping the GOP agenda, rather than working with Republicans. The NBC poll found similar results, with 65% of Democrats wanting the party to stick to its goals, even if it means risking bipartisan progress. Only 32% of Democrats are willing to compromise with President Trump and the GOP, a significant drop from 2017.
The polls have margins of error, with CNN's poll having a margin of plus or minus 3. 3% for adults and 5% for Democrats and Democratic leaners. The NBC poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3. 1%. These numbers show that while the Democratic Party is facing challenges, the situation is not hopeless. The party has a chance to regain support by addressing internal divisions and focusing on the issues that matter most to its base.
The Democratic Party's struggles are not unique. The Republican Party has also faced low favorability ratings in the past. In 2013, the GOP had its lowest-ever rating of 22% favorability, but went on to achieve significant electoral success the following year. This shows that low favorability ratings do not necessarily mean electoral defeat. The Democratic Party has an opportunity to learn from the GOP's experience and turn its current challenges into a chance for growth and renewal.
