The Downfall of a Legal Star

Los Angeles, USAWed Jun 04 2025
Tom Girardi, once a shining star in the legal world, has hit rock bottom. A federal judge handed down a sentence of seven years and three months in prison. Girardi was found guilty of stealing tens of millions of dollars from his clients. Many of these clients had suffered severe injuries or lost loved ones in accidents. On top of his prison sentence, Girardi was ordered to pay a fine of $35, 000 and $2. 3 million in restitution to his former clients. A jury had previously convicted him on four counts of wire fraud. The maximum sentence he could have received was 80 years, but the judge showed some leniency. Girardi's fall from grace is a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change. He was once one of the most famous lawyers in the country. He often took on big cases, fighting against powerful companies on behalf of victims of major disasters. One of his most notable cases involved a lawsuit against Pacific Gas and Electric utility in California. The settlement from that case was $333 million and was even featured in a movie starring Julia Roberts. But Girardi's legal empire crumbled, and he was stripped of his license to practice law in California in 2022. This was due to his actions of stealing from his own clients. Despite having Alzheimer's disease, the judge ruled that Girardi was mentally fit to stand trial and be sentenced. The judge had previously allowed Girardi to remain free until his sentencing but ordered him to turn himself in by July 17. During the trial, former clients testified against Girardi. These included an Arizona woman whose husband died in a boat accident and victims of a gas pipeline explosion in San Bruno, California. Prosecutors played voicemails in court where Girardi gave false reasons for why the money awarded by the court could not be paid out. He often told his clients, "Don't be mad at me. " Girardi's legal troubles have also spilled over into his personal life. He is the estranged husband of reality TV star Erika Jayne, who starred in The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Girardi himself appeared on the show numerous times between 2015 and 2020. The legal system has a way of exposing the truth, and in this case, it has shown the dark side of a once-respected figure.
