The investigation into the Interstate 75 shootings, which left five people seriously wounded, took a crucial turn when the remains believed to be those of Joseph Couch, the prime suspect, were discovered. The initial DNA test, however, was inconclusive due to the extreme decomposition of the body. This was confirmed by the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, which stated that a further DNA test using material extracted from bone would be conducted.
The shootings, which occurred on September 7, sent shockwaves across the country. The suspect, a 32-year-old former Army reservist, had sent a chilling text message 30 minutes prior to the incident, stating, "I'm going to kill a lot of people. Well try at least. " At least 12 vehicles were struck, and 20 to 30 rounds were fired during the rampage.
The discovery of the remains was made possible thanks to a couple, Fred and Sheila McCoy, who were livestreaming the search for Couch's body. Their efforts, combined with personal articles and a gun found near the body, led investigators to believe that it was indeed Couch's remains. The couple has been promised a $25,000 reward for their role in the discovery.
The autopsy revealed that the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. This has brought closure to the investigation, but the question remains: what motivated Couch to carry out such a heinous act? The DNA test from bone is expected to begin soon and take 24 to 48 hours to complete.
