The Future of AI in Bone and Muscle Health
Sun Jun 15 2025
Artificial intelligence (AI) is making big waves in the world of bone and muscle health. It is reshaping how doctors approach treatment. The question is whether it will live up to the hype. The focus is on making healthcare more effective and affordable. This is known as value-based care. AI is being used in many areas of medicine. Musculoskeletal health is one of them. This includes bones, joints, and muscles. Doctors are using AI to improve how they diagnose and treat problems in these areas.
To understand how AI is changing musculoskeletal care, a detailed review was done. This review looked at how AI is used in orthopedics. Orthopedics is the branch of medicine that deals with bones and muscles. The review found that AI can add value in three main ways. These are called allocative value, technical value, and personal value. Allocative value is about making sure resources are used wisely. Technical value is about how well the technology works. Personal value is about how it helps the patient.
The review also used something called the Gartner Hype Cycle. This is a way to show how new technologies go from being hyped to being widely used. The cycle has five stages. These are the technology trigger, peak of inflated expectations, trough of disillusionment, slope of enlightenment, and plateau of productivity. The review found that AI in musculoskeletal care is still in the early stages. It is moving from the peak of inflated expectations to the trough of disillusionment. This means that people are starting to see the limits of AI. But, it also means that there is still a lot of potential. AI could make a big difference in how doctors treat bone and muscle problems. It could make care more effective and affordable. But, it will take time and more research to get there.
One big question is how AI will affect doctors and patients. Will it make their lives easier? Or will it add more complexity? Only time will tell. But, one thing is clear. AI is here to stay in the world of musculoskeletal health. Doctors and patients need to be ready for the changes it will bring.

Is the focus on value-based care just a cover for A.I to start making decisions about who gets treatment and who doesn't?
How does the integration of A.I in musculoskeletal care ensure that it does not compromise the human touch and personal interaction essential in healthcare?
Will A.I ever be able to give a proper pat on the back or a comforting hug to a patient with musculoskeletal issues?
