Cities around the world are seeing changes in their vegetation, with some areas getting greener and others turning brown. This study looked at over 11, 000 urban areas globally to figure out what's driving these changes and how they might help or hurt city temperatures. The results? About 41% of cities are getting greener, while nearly 50% are browning. Interestingly, cities in wealthier countries are greening up more than those in poorer ones.
Rapid urban growth and too much nitrogen in the air are making things worse in city outskirts, but they're helping city centers grow greener. The greening areas are doing the best job of cooling down cities, which could help fight the "urban heat island" effect. This shows that planting more trees and greenery in cities could make them cooler and more equal for everyone.
