The Health Election: Six Major Issues Hanging in the Balance
USATue Nov 05 2024
The upcoming election is a big deal for healthcare in the US. We're talking about six major issues that could see big changes depending on who wins.
First, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) premiums. Right now, there are extra subsidies that make insurance cheaper, but they're set to expire in 2025. Vice President Harris wants to keep these subsidies, while former President Trump hasn't committed to that. Without these subsidies, insurance could get a lot pricier for millions of people.
Second, abortion. Trump has promised to leave abortion policy to the states, but he could also take nationwide actions to restrict access. Harris, on the other hand, wants to protect and possibly expand abortion rights, but she'd need Congress' help.
Third, drug prices. Both candidates say they want to lower drug prices, but their plans are different. Harris wants to expand negotiations and transparency, while Trump's plan focuses on trade policy and making more drugs available over the counter.
Fourth, transgender health. Trump has said he wants to ban hormone replacement therapy and other treatments for minors, and make it harder for adults to get these services. Harris has said she'll follow the law in providing care for transgender Americans.
Fifth, Medicaid. This program covers mostly low-income and disabled people. Harris wants to keep and improve it, while Trump sees it as a broken welfare program that needs cuts.
Sixth, biomedical agencies. Trump has hinted at giving a prominent anti-vaccine activist a lot of power over these agencies. This could mean big changes in how these agencies operate.
Each of these issues will affect many people, and the election could determine what happens next.
