2024 is shaping up to be the hottest year ever recorded. The World Weather Attribution (WWA) recently released a report showing that climate change played a significant role in the extreme weather events this year. The report highlights that man-made warming, with a record increase of 34. 34 Fahrenheit, led to severe heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, storms, and floods. These events resulted in at least 3, 700 deaths and the displacement of millions of people worldwide. The report identified 219 significant weather events in 2024, many of which were influenced by the natural climate pattern El Niño, now exacerbated by climate change. The WWA found that climate change had a more significant impact than El Niño on these events, particularly the historic drought in the Amazon.
Climate change added an average of 41 dangerous heat days globally and caused record-breaking rainfall and flooding. A study of 16 floods revealed that 15 were caused by warmer atmospheres holding more moisture, leading to heavier rainfall. These conditions also fueled larger, deadlier hurricanes and typhoons, like Hurricane Helene, which struck America in September and caused $53. 8 billion in damage in North Carolina alone. Critical ecosystems also suffered. The Amazon rainforest and the Pantanal Wetland experienced severe droughts and wildfires, leading to significant biodiversity loss. The Amazon plays a crucial role in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and controlling climate patterns. The Pantanal Wetland supports numerous wildlife species and is vital for regional flood control and global economic activity in cattle ranching and soy production. The WWA's report suggests several resolutions for 2025 to combat climate change. It calls for a faster shift away from fossil fuels, improved early warning systems for extreme weather events, better reporting of heat-related deaths, and increased funding for developing countries most affected by climate change.
