The Hidden Bond Between Fans and Their Favorite Stars

Fans often feel a special connection to the people they see on TV, movies or social media. Researchers call this feeling a parasocial experience. There are three parts to it: interacting with the star, forming a relationship, and feeling attached. The last part is called parasocial attachment. A recent review looked at studies from 2019 to 2024. It followed strict guidelines so the findings are reliable. Out of 59 studies, most focused on parasocial relationships. They examined how close fans think they are to the star and how much they act on that feeling.Only a few studies studied parasocial interaction, and just one looked at attachment. This shows that the strongest bond—attachment—is still not well understood. Common themes in the research include fans feeling familiar with a star, imagining a private connection, and behaving as if they are close friends. Researchers suggest that fans might use this bond to fill gaps in their own lives. This idea needs more study. The review calls for new research on how attachment drives fan behavior and the emotional impact it has.
