Have you ever thought about what makes your pet's food look so appealing? It turns out, a food colouring called ponceau 4R plays a big role. This colouring is used in cat, dog, and fish feed to make it look more vibrant and tasty. But hold on, there's more to the story.
The European Commission, along with some experts, took a closer look at ponceau 4R. They found that it's safe to use in pet food, but only up to certain limits. Cats can have up to 31 milligrams per kilogram of food, while dogs can have 37 milligrams, and ornamental fish can have 137 milligrams.
However, there are some grey areas. Scientists aren't sure if breathing in ponceau 4R is safe, or if it can cause skin or eye irritation, or even allergic reactions. Despite these unknowns, ponceau 4R is widely used because it makes pet food look more attractive.
This raises an important question: should we be more curious about what's in our pet's food, beyond what the label says? It might not be as straightforward as it seems.
