But there's a big gap in understanding how stigma related to fistula affects people's lives. A recent study looked at 199 articles from 41 countries, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. It found that fistula stigma comes in many forms. These include direct discrimination, internalized shame, and even structural barriers that make life harder for those affected. The study also found that fistula stigma is often linked to other issues like infertility, gender inequality, and poverty. This makes the problem even more complex.The consequences of this stigma are severe. Many women face mental health issues, lose their jobs, and become socially isolated. The study found that 35% of women with fistula experience divorce or separation. Depression and anxiety are also common, with rates as high as 65% and 52%, respectively. Most women cope by withdrawing from society or trying to keep themselves clean. Resistance to stigma is rare. Social support, however, can help protect against these negative effects. The study also found that there are few interventions to address fistula stigma. Those that exist often focus on counseling or community education. But there's a lack of strategies to make these interventions sustainable. The study highlights the need for more research and better strategies to prevent and mitigate fistula stigma.
