Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer women can develop. However, what's often overlooked is the stark reality that Black women are more likely to die from this disease than their white counterparts. According to a recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Black women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women, despite being diagnosed at similar rates.
This isn't due to biology or biology-related factors, but rather due to racial disparities in healthcare. Dr. Erica Warner, a cancer epidemiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, led the study and discovered that the biggest disparities were seen among women diagnosed with hormone receptor-positive tumors. These cancers require extended treatment with hormonal therapy, which is often associated with out-of-pocket costs. This can lead to financial barriers for Black women, who are more likely to be uninsured than white women.
Another major factor is the lack of representation of Black women in clinical trials. Historically, Black women have been underrepresented in these studies, which means that treatment options may not be tailored to their specific needs. This can lead to a lack of effective treatment options for Black women and a higher risk of mortality.
