The Hidden Virus: What’s Up with HMPV?
NetherlandsMon Jan 06 2025
You might not have heard of HMPV, but it's been around for a while. Discovered back in 2001 in the Netherlands, this virus is part of the RSV family and can cause symptoms like coughing, fever, and shortness of breath. Kids, seniors, and folks with weaker immune systems are at higher risk for severe cases. There's no vaccine yet, which is why it's making headlines, especially in China and the UK.
In China, hospitals are seeing more kids under 4 with HMPV, along with increases in RSV and flu cases. It's not just China, though. India has also detected a few cases. Even in the UK, the positivity rate for HMPV has jumped to 4. 5 percent, with kids under 5 being the most affected.
But wait, is this another pandemic? Experts say no, not really. Seasonal spikes in respiratory infections are normal. "HMPV has probably been around for a long time, but we only found it with the right tech, " explains one expert. Another virologist points out that HMPV isn't new to humans like Covid-19 was.
So, what can you do? Stick to the basics: stay home if you're sick, wash your hands, and wear a mask in public. It's the same deal as with other respiratory infections.
