They are known for healing issues related to the urinary tract and kidney stones. Saint Zoilo of Cordoba had a tough life. He was a martyr who was tortured by having his kidneys removed before his execution. Because of this, he is seen as a symbol of healing for kidney problems and urinary retention. Lastly, Saint Roch of Montpellier is linked to syphilis. He dedicated his life to caring for patients with this disease, which was often called the "plague of pleasure. " Urology in the Middle Ages also involved a practice called uroscopy. This method, which is over 6000 years old, involves looking at urine to diagnose diseases. It started with ancient Babylonian texts and was further developed by Hippocrates. Theophilus of Constantinople later systematized it in his work "De Urinis. " Uroscopy might seem basic now, but it was a big step forward. It showed that medicine could be based on observation and systematic analysis. This approach helped pave the way for modern medical practices. However, it's important to think critically about these historical practices. While they show the efforts of the past, they also highlight the limitations of medieval medicine. The reliance on saints and primitive methods shows how far medical knowledge has come.
