Creative thinking is crucial for innovation. It's about coming up with fresh and useful ideas. Aerobic exercise is known to boost brain power, but how it affects creativity is still a mystery. Some studies suggest that both single and multiple exercise sessions might give creativity a lift. However, the best type, duration, and timing of exercise for creative thinking are still up in the air. A recent experiment looked into whether a 20-minute bike ride at a moderate-to-vigorous pace could boost divergent creative thinking. Divergent thinking is all about exploring many possible solutions. The study also checked how the timing of the assessment affected the results. Fifty-one young adults took part in Guilford's Alternate Uses Task (AUT). This task measures how many ideas someone can come up with, how practical those ideas are, how many different categories they cover, and how creative the ideas are. The participants did the AUT under three different conditions: after exercising, during exercising, or after watching an exercise video. The results showed no big differences between the control group and those who exercised afterward. However, those who did the task while exercising had lower scores in originality, the number of ideas, and the practicality of their ideas. This drop in performance could be due to the challenge of doing two things at once. So, a 20-minute bike ride doesn't seem to boost creativity and might even hinder it if you try to be creative while exercising. This study points out the need for more research. Scientists need to figure out how different types, lengths, and times of exercise affect creative thinking. Only then can we fully understand how to use exercise to get the most out of our brains. The study also raises questions about the practicality of exercising while trying to be creative. It's clear that multitasking during creative tasks can be counterproductive. This is something to keep in mind whether you're an artist, a student, or just someone trying to come up with new ideas. It might be better to exercise before or after your creative session, rather than during.
