The Impact of Kelp Removal on Underwater Communities
southwest England, UKThu Jan 23 2025
You're exploring the underwater world off the coast of southwest England. You might come across vast canopies of a seaweed called Laminaria. Scientists wanted to understand how these big, green kelp forests influence their surroundings. They focused on two subtidal sites where these canopies grow. The team set up three different scenarios: leaving the kelp untouched, removing half of it, and pulling out all of it. Over the next five months, they measured changes in light, temperature, and sedimentation, and counted the new kelp plants and other sea creatures that moved in. Guess what? Removing the kelp helped more light reach the sea floor. This boosted the growth of new kelp plants and other seaweeds. So, if kelp forests get damaged or vanish, it could lead to big changes in the whole underwater community. Storms, harvesting, or water quality issues could knock these canopies back, altering how the underwater world functions.
