The Jets' Fresh Start: Why Aaron Rodgers Wasn't the Right Fit
Malibu, USAFri Apr 18 2025
The Jets have been eager to part ways with Aaron Rodgers since they hired Aaron Glenn. Rodgers, however, has been reluctant to let go. Recently, Rodgers shared his side of the story about a meeting with Glenn and GM Darren Mougey. Rodgers flew across the country to discuss his future with the team, but the meeting didn't go as he expected.
Rodgers thought he was there to offer his insights and opinions. Instead, he was informed that the Jets were moving in a different direction at the quarterback position. Rodgers was taken aback. He had flown all the way to New Jersey, and the meeting lasted only a few minutes. Glenn asked Rodgers if he was sure he wanted to play football, to which Rodgers responded affirmatively. But Glenn made it clear that Rodgers wasn't in their plans anymore.
Rodgers was surprised by the abruptness of the meeting. He had expected a more in-depth conversation. He also took issue with Glenn's assumption that he would undermine the coach in front of the team. Rodgers felt disrespected and questioned Glenn's approach. He even suggested that Glenn's actions were a bit reckless.
The Jets' decision to move on from Rodgers wasn't a sudden one. They had been preparing for this since they hired Glenn. The team had made significant efforts to accommodate Rodgers, including hiring Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator and overpaying Allen Lazard in free agency. But Rodgers' time with the Jets was marked by more headlines off the field than on it. He made more news for his media appearances than his performance on the field.
In February, the Jets finally cut ties with Rodgers. It was a first for Rodgers, who had never been fired before. He expressed his disappointment with the way the meeting was handled, suggesting that a phone call would have been more respectful. But Glenn's approach was straightforward. He didn't want to drag out the process. Rodgers was informed of the decision as soon as he arrived at the Jets facility.
Rodgers' time with the Jets was marked by distractions. He was a walking distraction, making appearances on TV shows and causing a stir. The Jets never stopped him from these appearances, even as he used them to criticize teammates and spread conspiracy theories. Now, with Rodgers gone, the Jets are focusing on building a new culture. They've gutted their roster and are moving forward with a younger team. Justin Fields is their new quarterback, and he's not known for making weekly TV appearances. The Jets are hoping for a fresh start, and Rodgers' departure is a big part of that.
