Timothy Loehmann, the officer involved in the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014, has once again faced consequences for his actions. This time, he was dismissed from his role as a ranger at the Snowshoe Resort Community District in West Virginia. The board of the district made this decision during an emergency meeting, marking the fourth instance in seven years where Loehmann has left a small department following public outcry.
The shooting of Tamir Rice, a Black child playing with a pellet gun, sparked widespread outrage and brought attention to issues of police treatment of Black individuals and systemic racism. The officers involved, including Loehmann, claimed that they had instructed Rice to raise his hands before the shooting. However, the grand jury's decision not to indict Loehmann or his partner further fueled the controversy.
The city of Cleveland settled a lawsuit related to Rice's death for $6 million and subsequently fired Loehmann for discrepancies found in his police application. Despite this, Loehmann managed to secure a part-time position with a police department in southeast Ohio in 2018. However, he withdrew his application shortly after facing criticism from Rice's mother and others.
In 2022, Loehmann was sworn in as the sole police officer in Tioga, Pennsylvania, but left amid backlash following his hiring. Last year, he resigned from his position as a probationary officer in White Sulphur Springs City, West Virginia, leading to the resignation of the police chief who had hired him.
Critics have questioned Loehmann's ability to hold public safety positions, with one attorney describing his determination to seek such roles as pathological. The repeated hiring and subsequent departures of Loehmann raise concerns about the vetting processes and judgment of the departments involved.
