The Legacy of a Modern Pope
VaticanMon Apr 21 2025
The Catholic Church has lost its leader, Pope Francis, at the age of 88. Francis, originally Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was born in Argentina and became the first pope from the Americas. He was elected in 2013, taking the name Francis in honor of the 13th-century Italian monk. His papacy was marked by significant changes and controversies.
Francis's health had been declining for some time. He had been hospitalized several times and used a wheelchair in his final months. His last public appearance was on Easter Sunday, where he met with Vice President JD Vance. Despite his health issues, Francis remained active in his duties until the end.
One of Francis's notable decisions was to live in the Vatican's guesthouse instead of the papal apartments. This choice reflected his desire to break away from traditional customs. He also made headlines for his simple attire during his first appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Instead of the usual red vestments, he wore a plain white cassock.
Francis's papacy was a time of significant change for the Catholic Church. He tackled the sex abuse crisis, changed the church's stance on the death penalty, and encouraged environmental awareness. He also increased the role of women in the church and took a softer approach to traditional teachings on homosexuality. In 2023, he allowed priests to bless people in same-sex relationships, although he clarified that this did not bless the relationship itself.
However, Francis disappointed some of his liberal supporters. He did not change the church's teachings on women's ordination, abortion, or contraception. His handling of the sex abuse scandal also drew criticism. He accepted the resignation of Theodore McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington, D. C. , after allegations of abuse surfaced. But Francis was criticized for not acting sooner.
Francis also faced backlash for his handling of abuse accusations against the Rev. Marko Rupnik. Rupnik was allowed to continue working in the Vatican despite the investigation. Francis's restrictions on the traditional Latin Mass also sparked controversy. He issued a papal directive in 2021 that limited the celebration of the Latin Mass, a move praised by liberals but criticized by conservatives.
During his time as pope, Francis played a significant role in diplomatic and geopolitical affairs. He helped improve relations between the U. S. and Cuba and established diplomatic ties with Palestinians. He also made unannounced visits to the Russian Embassy to plead for peace during the Ukraine conflict. Francis's diplomatic efforts were a key part of his legacy.
Francis's papacy will be remembered for his unique approach to leadership and his efforts to modernize the Catholic Church. His death marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for the church. The College of Cardinals will now convene to elect a new pope, and the world watches to see who will lead the Catholic Church into the future.
