The Legendary Friars Clubhouse Is Up for Sale

The iconic Friars Club on East 55th Street in New York City is in trouble. It’s being put up for sale because it owes a lot of money, around $13 million. The club is famous for its roasts, where celebrities like Jack Benny and Eddie Cantor would joke around. Jack Benny once brought a pig onstage, saying it was there to eat the stuff thrown at him. Eddie Cantor's dressing room door had a sign that said “Jesus saves, ” and someone wrote under it, “But not like Eddie Cantor. ” Milton Berle, known for his humor, once joked about his bad luck. Bob Hope had a witty reply. Comedian Jan Murray even made a joke about a foreign waiter. Shirley MacLaine had a clever comment about JFK’s love life. Jerry Lewis, of Martin & Lewis, used to joke too, but he had to turn down chairing a dinner because he was making a movie. In more recent news, Cardinal Dolan blessed animals at Radio City Music Hall, which wasn't an ordinary event. He even claimed that someone was personally at Jesus’ birth. The Friars Club’s sale is a big deal now, making people talk about its future. There are other events happening too, like the Broadway Association gathering and a new movie.
