David Bonderman, a billionaire investor who co-founded TPG, a global investment firm, passed away at 82. TPG, along with Bonderman's family office and the NHL's Seattle Kraken, announced his death. Born in L. A. , Bonderman studied at the University of Washington and Harvard Law School. In 1993, he founded TPG with Jim Bonderman and Bill Price. TPG grew into a massive firm with $240 billion in assets and 28 worldwide offices.
A key player in media and entertainment, TPG's biggest venture was its partnership with CAA, which it exited in 2023. TPG also owned Cinespace Studios and Studio Babelsburg. In 2024, TPG acquired AT&T's stake in DirecTV. Early investments included Spotify and Fandom. Bonderman was also part of groups that acquired MGM in 2004 and Univision in 2006.
Bonderman had a varied career, including work as a security guard at Seattle's Space Needle and as Special Assistant to the U. S. Attorney General. He was known for his role in the Dirks v. Securities and Exchange Commission case. In 2018, he brought the Seattle Kraken NHL team to the city.
