The Most Expensive House Race in U. S. History
A House race in North Carolina just set a grim record. Candidates and outside groups spent $53 million there. That makes it the most expensive House contest in American history. Democrat Don Davis held off Republican Laurie Buckhout. State Republicans had redrawn the district map to help their party win more seats. Davis still won by roughly 10,000 votes this time around. Two years earlier, his margin was about 6,000 votes.
The spending explosion is hard to ignore. In 2022, the same district saw less than $7 million in election spending. By 2024, that figure climbed to $38.5 million. Now it has jumped to $53 million. That is a 600 percent increase in only four years. Nationwide, congressional races could reach nearly $12 billion this cycle. Back in 2018, the total was $5.7 billion.
The district itself is struggling. It has the lowest median household income in North Carolina at $58,749. The poverty rate sits at 16 percent, the highest in the state. Think about what $53 million could do for families. It could pay for food, rent, or medical bills. Instead, the money buys harsh television ads.
A small group of wealthy people is behind much of this spending. Just 40 individuals spent $2.4 billion this election cycle. Republican donor Elon Musk led the pack. Democrats also rely on deep-pocketed supporters. Supreme Court rulings have made it difficult to place firm limits on campaign cash. Without guardrails, the spending arms race continues.
Change is possible. A constitutional amendment could let federal and state leaders set spending limits. Donations from government contractors should be banned. Super PACs and dark money groups need to disclose their donors. Ethics laws must be stronger. Public funding for campaigns could reduce the power of big donors. Many winners on Tuesday promised to fix this system. Both parties can work together when the new session starts in January.
