The Murder Mystery that Didn't Quite Kill the Competition
Hulu, USAMon Sep 16 2024
In a shocking turn of events, Hulu's Only Murders in the Building failed to win a single award at the 2024 Emmys, despite being nominated for 21 awards. The show, which stars Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short, was expected to make a strong showing, but ultimately went home empty-handed. But what about the other shows that failed to win despite their impressive nominations? Let's take a closer look.
It's not just Only Murders that didn't win. Saturday Night Live, with its 16 nominations, lost to Last Week Tonight With John Oliver in the scripted variety series category. Fallout and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, both with 16 nominations, won only two awards each at the Creative Arts Emmys. Palm Royale, with 11 nominations, won one award at the Creative Arts Emmys, while Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and Lessons in Chemistry, both with 10 nominations, won one award each.
But what about the underdogs? Hacks, a show that many thought would lose to The Bear, shocked everyone by winning the top prize for best comedy series. Hacks star Jean Smart also won the best comedy actress award, beating out Ayo Edebiri and Quinta Brunson.
In other surprises, Liza Colón-Zayas won the best supporting actress in a comedy series award for her role in The Bear, beating out Hannah Einbinder. And Lamorne Morris won the best supporting actor in a limited series award for his role in Fargo, beating out Jonathan Bailey.
So what does this mean for the future of these shows? Will Only Murders come back stronger next year? Will Hacks continue to dominate the comedy series category?
