The Mysterious Baby Garin Case: A Mother Arrested 30 Years Later
Monterey County, USAMon Oct 21 2024
Thirty years ago, a man in California discovered a shocking sight while looking for aluminum cans. He found a newborn baby boy, wrapped in a pink and blue blanket, inside a red shopping bag. The baby was believed to be around three days old. The body was found at an unofficial garbage dump on Garin Road in Monterey County on December 3, 1994.
Police couldn’t identify the baby or his mother back then. They named the infant Baby Garin after the road where he was found. The name Garin means protection, and authorities vowed to be guardians for their community.
Recently, advancements in DNA technology helped investigators make a breakthrough. They arrested a 60-year-old woman, Pamela Ferreyra, who they believe is the baby’s mother. She has been charged with one count of murder. The cause of death is still unknown.
When found, the baby was dressed in a turquoise sleeper suit, blue jumper, and white socks and cap. This suggested he might have been born outside of a hospital. The case went cold for decades until a cold case task force reopened it last year.
Ferreyra was taken into custody recently and is being held at the Monterey County Jail on a $1 million bond. Authorities hope this case encourages people to come forward in other cold cases. They emphasize that all victims matter, regardless of when the crime occurred.
