Health care workers are often the frontline heroes in the battle against infectious diseases. However, when a mysterious case of bird flu cropped up in Missouri, four additional health care workers fell ill after caring for the patient. The CDC is still investigating, but the question on everyone's mind is: was the virus transmitted from person to person? The first patient, who was hospitalized from August 22 to August 25, had tested positive for H5N1 bird flu. The CDC reported that five health care workers who came into contact with this patient developed mild respiratory illness symptoms. While it's unclear if they were actually infected with H5N1, the fact that they became ill after caring for the patient raises concerns about the possibility of person-to-person transmission.
The CDC is closely monitoring the situation, but it's been slow to get answers. The agency has collected blood samples from the five health care workers who fell ill, which will be sent to their headquarters in Atlanta for further analysis. The CDC is also studying a blood sample from the second household contact who became ill, but wasn't tested at the time. This isn't the first time that Missouri has reported health care workers falling ill after treating a patient with bird flu. In the past, there have been rare instances where it was thought that person-to-person transmission had occurred, but ongoing chains of transmission have never been detected. The investigation has been criticized for its slow pace, with some experts saying that public health credibility is at stake. The CDC relies on states to request their assistance, and since no request has been made, they have been unable to send investigators to Missouri.
