The Mystery of the Unwanted Signal Chat Guest
Washington DC, USAMon Mar 31 2025
A group chat on the Signal app caused quite a stir in Washington. It included top officials from the Trump administration discussing an upcoming US attack on Houthi targets in Yemen. The chat was leaked to the public, raising concerns about the security measures in place.
Jeffrey Goldberg, an editor, was part of this chat, which he found puzzling. He dismissed the explanation given by Mike Waltz, the national security adviser. Waltz suggested that Goldberg's number was somehow "sucked in" to his phone by mistake. Goldberg found this hard to believe. He pointed out that the most likely explanation is that his number was already in Waltz's contacts.
Goldberg's involvement in the chat sparked a lot of headlines and discussions. People were worried about how secure the information was. Donald Trump, the president at the time, downplayed the incident. He said Waltz was a good man and had no reason to resign. Waltz himself claimed he had never met or spoken to Goldberg, which Goldberg denied.
The national security council confirmed the chat's authenticity. They are still investigating how Goldberg ended up in the group. Some theories suggest it was a simple mistake, like selecting the wrong contact. Others think it might have been intentional sabotage.
Democratic senator Mark Warner was critical of the incident. He said that if a military officer or CIA agent had been this careless with classified information, they would have been fired. Warner uses Signal himself but agrees that it's not a place for classified info.
Congressman Mike Turner welcomed an investigation into the matter. He called it "Signalgate" and wanted to know if such conversations should happen on Signal. Despite the controversy, he praised the Houthi strikes as a successful operation.
Susan Rice, who served as national security adviser under Barack Obama, called the leak "extraordinarily reckless. " She said even the existence of the conversations was classified. Rice believed this kind of behavior would not be tolerated in a normal administration.
